Jewellery Studio

Reinhardt van Zyl has his studio on the Artbox premises, where he also offers classes in jewellery design and manufacturing.

He completed his BTech degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the Tshwane University of Technology in 2014.
The topic of his research was “Jewellery inspired by heavy metal band logos”, where he used the aesthetics of heavy metal band logos to create jewellery pieces of his own design and particular style. After finishing his studies he participated in a two-year internship programme coordinated by the Mining Qualifications Authority.

In 2010 Reinhardt was the overall winner of the international Pearl Essence jewellery design competition for his design “Curvature”, a unique, edgy bracelet featuring fresh water pearls and black rhodium-plated 18 carat gold.
The Pearl Essence Design programme, the world’s first global pearl focussed design initiative encompassing all different types of pearls, was run by the Dubai Pearl Exchange, a subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre. The competition drew 644 designs from 46 institutes across 11 countries. The first prize was a month-long internship at the international jewellery design and manufacturing company of Stephen Webster in London.

Some of Reinhardt’s other work has been exhibited in various group exhibitions, including a regional PPC Imaginarium exhibition, several TUT student exhibitions as well as a three person exhibition entitled “The Absence of Purpose”, along with Janus and Mienke Fouché, at ArtBox in June 2017.

Reinhardt prefers an alternative design approach in terms of aesthetics and influence to create unique pieces. He draws inspiration from the alternative sub-cultures, fantasy and sci- fi art, steampunk, architecture, religious symbolism and art movements such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Cubism.

Services provided include the design and manufacture of unique jewellery pieces, jewellery repairs and alterations, ring sizing, mould making, casting, jewellery classes, polishing and jewellery cleaning. Other small scale creative metalwork can be done on request. Engraving, electroplating and setting of stones are outsourced as required.
